Implants in Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is not a simple process of tweaking the nose and augmenting it, it does much more than that.  A good Rhinoplasty will able to help you breathe better, clear the airways, and redefine your facial features entirely. Augmentation of the nose depends on a lot on the existing features of the nose and what you desire. Of course in the end it is the surgeon’s recommendations that will help you decide what the best is.

There are two kinds of Rhinoplasties: open and closed, in both approaches the goal is to tweak the nose in such a way that it retains its functional properties (even better) and at the same time gives it the nose a more balanced look. Implants in Rhinoplasty are used to augment the nose in a permanent manner. There are many kinds of implants in Rhinoplasty these include silicone implant, porous polyethylene implants and Goretex implant and the patient’s very own cartilage implant.

Each has got its own advantages and disadvantages and the surgeon’s preference and the requirement of the work on the nose. We will now look at them one by one.

Cartilage Implant

These are the most natural implants that you will ever hear of. The cartilage is harvested from the patients existing nasal cartilage, or from the ear or the rip. Being natural there is a less risk of infection and body accepts the implants better. However for these kinds of implants there has to be a separate surgical procedure to get the cartilage and there is a risk of mark on the ear or the rib resulting in scarring. This process increases the operation time for implants in Rhinoplasty.

Silicone Implant in Rhinoplasty

Silicone is one of the most common materials used in implants. Silicone nasal implants are used in augmentative Rhinoplasty. The silicone implants usually come in two shapes L and I and can be easily trimmed by the surgeon to fit the nose better. The L shaped implant is used to add height to the nasal bridge and definition to the nasal tip and the I shaped silicone implant in Rhinoplasty are used to enhance the nasal bridge. The biggest advantage of silicone implants is that they can be easily removed. The biggest disadvantage of silicone implants is that their hardness gives them an unnatural look. Since they are artificial there is an obvious risk of infection and destruction of the columella which can lead to the implant being dispositioned resulting to further problems.

Porous Polyethylene Implant

Porous Polyethylene implants in Rhinoplasty are very popular implants in recent years. Also known as PE implants these are chemically very pure and porous plastic material. Initially the PEs where used in cases where previous Rhinoplasty had done irreparable damage, nose injuries or severe nasal deformities. But they are now commonly used in extension grafts, spreader grafts, and even for dorsal augmentation. The material is biocompatible and permits growth of connective tissue which helps in natural appearance.

Goretex Implants

Goretex implants are very popular among surgeons worldwide. They are made up of material called the polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE). This material is also used for filling in facial lines, wrinkles and even lips, chin and cheek augmentation. The advantage of Goretex Implants is that it lets the tissue to grow which means that the new tissue growth along the implants will make it a part of the existing structure. Hence there is very little chance of the implants moving from there place and therefore the results are long lasting. Goretex material is also easy to work with because of its flexibility. However the disadvantage is that since the nasal structure changes gradually as we age it will become very difficult to remove the implant in case problems arise.

The suitability of the implant in Rhinoplasty for your nose will depend on the type of expectations you have your nose. Therefore, always seek the expertise of an surgeon who has a long history of performing Rhinoplasty using implants.
