Silicone Nose Implants

Implants in Rhinoplasty are not uncommon. They are mostly done for aesthetic reasons. Silicone nasal implants are one of the most common materials used for rhinoplasty. The use of implants is mostly done with the aim of reconstructive rhinoplasty. The use of implants in Rhinoplasty is very common in Asian patients. This is because Asian Rhinoplasty noses essentially lack the height and nasal tip definition.

Implants in Rhinoplasty are available in different shapes and sizes and can be customized to suit the patient’s needs. Silicone is a very popular material that is used in implants worldwide. The advantage of chin implants in rhinoplasty is that they provide long-lasting results.

Types of Silicone Nose Implants

Silicone implants come in two types one is L-shaped and the other is I-shaped. Generally, they come with a pre-formed shape but can be trimmed by the surgeon to fit the patient’s nose.

The I-shaped implants are used for dorsal hump nose augmentation and the L-shaped ones are used to add to the height of the dorsum as well as add definition to the tip.  The L-shaped implant gives the surgeon an added advantage in that it helps maintain the continuity between the nasal bridge and the tip giving the nose a more even look whereas with I-shaped implants the tip plasty might be needed as a separate procedure. However, there is one disadvantage of using the L-shaped implant it might cause a tent pole kind of effect if not inserted properly.

Silicone implants are also classified on the basis of their hardness as soft, medium, and hard. Ideally, the preference of most of the surgeons worldwide is an implant with varying hardness i.e. it should be soft at the tip and hard for increasing the height of the ideal nose.

Advantages of Using Silicone Nose implants

It is easily removable

This is one of the biggest advantages of using silicone implants that they can be removed easily. Since they do not integrate with the tissue if the patient is not happy with how the implant looks or if it is causing any trouble to the patient it can be removed with the simple process.

When the silicone implants are inserted in the nose to augment the height of the bridge and tip refining the body recognizes it as a foreign implant and tissues go around it to enclose it. This prevents the implant from adhering to the neighboring tissues and this helps in removing and manipulating the implants better.

No Height Change Even After Prolonged use

Unlike other implants in Rhinoplasty, silicone implants are not affected by the other growth. They are very popular in terms that they retain their stable shape even long after insertion.

Disadvantages of using Silicone Nose Implants

Infections

Since the implants do not adhere to the neighboring tissues at all they are is more susceptible to infections. The fibrous tissues that grow around it form a kind of capsule that can become visible through the skin.

This can also result in the malfunctioning of the implant, which can cause scars if not immediately removed.

Appearance of the node on the nose

Calcification is very common with silicone implants. When the implants are there in the body for a long period of the time calcification starts and over time this calcification can appear like the shape of the node on the dorsal surface.

Unnatural look

The hardness of silicone implants can cause an unnatural look. Also, it causes pressure on the skin. Silicone implants done in Caucasians face the problem of implant showing through the skin because the skin is thin. In Asian Rhinoplasty, this is usually not the problem because Asians have thick skin.

Suitability of Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are primarily used for dorsal augmentation, especially for the dorsum that is thick-skinned. This can be combined with osteotomy to modify the bone too. The suitability of the implant will be determined by the surgeon.  If you are looking to augment your nose to your suitability then silicone implants are a good choice.
